I imagine the length of the penatly and where on the field would be significant factors to consider.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01838293735141324662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38600807.post-29192529132491878242009-11-09T20:58:50.878-05:002009-11-09T20:58:50.878-05:00Hey Brian,

It would take some time to go through their player participation data and put together formations, but might be an interesting study.

The only other option is to buy football outsiders charting data, but probably not worth it.Jay Paradisenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38600807.post-38438808471775581262009-11-09T16:41:28.522-05:002009-11-09T16:41:28.522-05:00You take the sack, almost always. The question in the comments was whether defenses adjust to stop the long pass, opening up a good run play. You said that there was no public dataset on defensive formations in a given situation, but perhaps you could look at the average yards per run on 2nd and 1 compared to 3rd and 1. This might give us some indication of what the defenses are doing.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05330400337844674142noreply@blogger.com
