Andy Reid: Hero

Reid was my goat of the year for 2008 for the season's single worst 4th down decision, but today he's my hero of the day (or at least for the 1st quarter of the 1 pm games). Reid started the game with an unexpected onside kick, which is an underused but very worthwhile tactic. This time it didn't work out, but the Eagles recovered nicely, and now lead 10 - 7.

The linchpin of the Eagles's 1st quarter TD drive was a successful 4th down conversion. With a 4th and 1 on the Redskins' 42, Reid went for it, made it, and went on to take the lead (for the moment).

3rd qtr, down by 6--IND goes for it on 4th and 1 at their own 44. Converts.

end of 3rd qtr, up by 7--SEA goes for it on 4th and 1 (inches) at the STL 18. Converts. Goes on to get the TD.

Tennessee had far more than 1% probability of getting the TD on the last play...

Perhaps Andy Reid was playing for a tie last year. I seem to recall the Eagles having the short end of the stick in virtually every tiebreaking scenario. I'm somewhat inclined to come to his defense, because he seems to be one of the most contrarian playcallers in the NFL.

Guessing there will be a new hero after the game tonight. One mistake by Harbaugh was wasting their timeout in case they failed. Teams need to make these decisions before they have to waste timeouts :)
