Introducing Our New Writers

I'd like to introduce the new writers/analysts here at Advanced NFL Stats. I was surprised by the response to the call for writers, which was both a blessing and a curse. It was great because there are so many talented people with an interest in football stats, but it also meant making some tough choices on who to include. I leaned strongly toward people with previous analytic and writing experience. So without further ado, here is the new cast:

Marc Hulet

Marc is a former newspaper reporter and editor from Canada who has spent the past five years covering Major League Baseball - with a focus on prospects and rookies - for a variety of publications and websites including FanGraphs, Baseball Analysts, Heater Magazine, Rotoworld, ESPN, NBC Sports and The Toronto Sun. His work has also appeared on book shelves in two editions (2010-11) of The Graphical Player baseball annual. He's excited to bring his love of prospects and rookies to the world of professional football via Advanced NFL Stats. Marc lives in London, Ontario with his wife and daughter.

Jack Moore

Jack is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics. Along with Marc, he is a colleague of Advanced NFL Stats's own Carson Cistulli at FanGraphs and also writes about baseball at Disciples of Uecker (a Milwaukee Brewers blog) among other places, and his work has also been featured on ESPN and ESPN Insider. His love for the Wisconsin Badgers has instigated a foray into the world of football analysis as well, with a blog named Badger of Honor. His introduction to game theory as part of his college education opened whole new doors for analyzing the game of football, adding a completely new dimension to watching the game besides simply tallying fantasy points. Jack will initially be our game recap/review guy.

Zach Sanders

Zach writes about baseball for FanGraphs (Is anyone noticing a trend here?), and he has contributed to countless other baseball sites on the interwebs. Zach's past football work could be found on KFFL.com in late-2008 and early-2009, but he suggests not searching for them unless you wish to be disappointed. He is forced to watch the Seahawks tank this year in an effort to draft Andrew Luck, and he remembers where he was when Bill Levy ruined his life forever. You can follow him on twitter @zvsanders. Zach is going to be our team rankings guy.

Josh Katz

Josh graduated in 2010 from Drew University with a BA in political science and philosophy and is currently pursuing a PhD in statistics at NC State doing research in stochastic modeling and quantitative methods in the social sciences. Previous projects include working on models to estimate diabetes risk as well as an adaptation of Google's PageRank algorithm to rank tennis players on the ATP Tour. Josh will be our playoff probability guy.

And everyone has already met Keith Goldner and his Markov drive model. And Carson Cistulli too. I owe Carson my gratitude, who opened the door to the idea of adding new writers when wrote to me last September suggesting he contribute a post each week.

I'd like to thank everyone who responded to the writer call. I'm excited about this new phase of the site, and I'm looking forward to all the great stuff our new writers have to offer.

Interesting. Do you have any plans on making this a pay site? Somewhere down the road, that might not be a bad idea. I've never seen a NFL site with this level of valid info.

    Noooooooo curse you Chuck Winkler.

  3. Kyle B says:

    Carson Cistulli? Really? Jesus Christ.

  4. Brian Burke says:

Chuck-It already is a pay site. Don't tell me you've been getting access for free!

Actually, no need to pay. I just sold the rights to my life story to Paramount, who is going to make a move about me starring Brad Pitt. 90% of the movie will be Brad staring at a giant Excel spreadsheet and trying to teach himself PHP and mySQL.

Yay for more jobs for Badgers and yay for making stats interesting only a couple years too late for me!

    Brian Burke,

Great site. Found it last year. There seems to be alot of injuries early this season. Has anyone ever done a study on early season vs late season injuries? The amount or severity.
