Does the effect of the new kickoff rule mean that kicking a fg is now slightly more attractive than going for it on 4th down as the points lost due to giving up field position is now not as bad and so the ratio of the net value of a FG compared to TD has improved.
The effect is very slight. The value of a TD increases just as much.
The overall effect is small to begin with. The average starting position moved from about the 29 to the 22. Possession is much more important than those 7 yds.
(One reason you go for it when outside the 30 is that, later on the drive, if you end up with a 4th and long, you now have a shorter FG attempt.)
Lastly, the reason FGs would become slightly more attractive is not because they are worth more relative to TDs, but because they are worth more relative to a failure to convert.
Man it seems like every week there is a new statistic somewhere. I have no idea what AV is.
